Gameloft just announced Amazing Spider-Man, which gonna launch in the July with the moive. Touchgen has gained the first-hand game play footage.
It's more more evident than with Spider-Man 2. Instead of confining you to a linear path (something that is extremely restrictive for a super hero) the game let you go pretty much anywhere, and all high up web-slinging from rooftop to rooftop.
It’s clear here with Amazing Spider-Man that Gameloft have taken the same approach, giving you the freedom of the city. I was dubious at first that they would be able to pull it off, but once in my hands I was swinging around with ease, now and again returning to the streets or rooftops to take out a bunch of thugs.
The fighting is similar to Gameloft’s last Spidey game – and also tries to mirror the combat of the extremely successful Batman Arkham series on consoles – allowing you to pull off combos while dodging incoming attacks with spidey-sense. It feels very fluid, particularly when combined with the web, to draw enemies in to you awaiting fist or foot.
Missions have a GTA feel to them, where you must utilise the map to set way-points to your next objective, which typically involve you to take out thugs, rescue damsels in distress and of course engage with the bigger foes in the game, such as the Lizard.
Perhaps the most promising aspect of the game for me though, were the photographic missions. Here you must freeze-frame the game and take a snap of yourself in the most heroic pose, while framing it in front of a newsworthy setting, such as an Oscorp facility. You could zoom in and rotate the scene anyway you like until you get the perfect shot, from which the game will give you a rating.
Graphically Amazing Spider-Man is one of the better looking Gameloft sandbox games, featuring what looked like an improved version of the Gangstar Engine. More importantly, the frame rate was smooth and the draw distance was solid, which is essential for a game like this where you can be traversing from block to block in a few short swings.
